From Altar Boy to Chabad Rabbi

A young man’s journey to discover his Jewish roots

Join us for the exciting journey of a teenage boy who rediscovered his life. Hear Rabbi Matisyahu Devlin, the son of a Jewish mother and devout Catholic father, tell his tale of growing up in the Church until that fateful night in a Manhattan coffee shop. Featured on National Geographic, his story is sure to entertain and inspire you from beginning to end.

One of eleven siblings, Matisyahu grew up in York, PA where he attended Catholic school through his senior year of high school. He also went to church for the first eighteen years of his life, where he was an altar boy and sang in the choir. After being expelled from school and getting into legal trouble, he found himself sleeping in a Starbucks in Manhattan. One night, Matisyahu met a Jewish teenager who would forever change his life. This boy told him that if his mother was Jewish, so was he! Nothing could take that away from him, not even baptism and Catholic schooling! Matisyahu then spent a few months learning in yeshiva. He left the observant lifestyle, but after spending several days in a coma, and several months at a campus Chabad House, he returned to study in yeshiva for five years. Matisyahu is now happily married with two beautiful children. After running a campus Chabad House with his wife in California for two years, he currently teaches first grade Hebrew and Secular studies at Lubavitch Educational Center in Miami. Matisyahu also assists at a yeshiva in Miami for young men who, like himself, were not raised in observant Jewish homes.
